Current Unit: Exploring 2 Dimensional Spaces
Students are:
*Determining the area of a rectangular figure using a strategy besides counting all as well as determining the perimeter of any figure, including figures with a missing side dimension. Students will also be introduced to multiplying by multiples of tens.
Big Ideas in the Unit:
*Area and perimeter are measurable attributes of plane figures.
*Area is related to multiplication and addition.
*There is a relationship between area and perimeter.
*There are place value patterns that occur when multiplying by multiples of ten.
*Further development of the properties of operations.
Vocabulary:
*area, perimeter, dimension, rectilinear, array, side length, square unit, complex figures, length, width
By the end of the unit, students will be introduced to:
*Determine the area of a rectilinear figure
*Creating rectangles with the same area and different perimeters or same perimeter and different areas
*Using the distributive property to break apart factors

Good Mathematicians...
*Make Sense of mathematics
*Keep Trying even when problems are challenging
*Remember that it's OK To Make Mistakes and revise our thinking
*Share our mathematical ideas with our classmates
*Listen to understand someone else's idea; give each other time to think
*Ask Questions that help us better understand the mathematics
*Agree and Disagree with mathematical ideas, not with each other
*Remember that EVERYONE has Good Mathematical Ideas
