- Following a Character's Journey:
- Noticing how stories are shaped like a mountain (readers watch characters go up and down), expecting characters to face and react to trouble, notice the roles of secondary characters in the main character's journey, noticing the roles of illustrations, paying close attention to the climax of a story and noticing how the main character is tested, notice how a character resolves big trouble, and learning lessons from the character and story
- Comparing and Contrasting Characters across Books
- Noticing similarities and differences between characters in different books, comparing problems and character reactions, engaging in mini-arguments about characters using text evidence, comparing and contrasting lessons learned
